Helping an airport establish the evidence for future air traffic service decisions
An airport considering the future of its air traffic services needed an independent understanding of its current position before determining what should happen next.
Solus undertook a structured assessment combining stakeholder engagement, organisational capability assessment, operational analysis and review of existing service and performance arrangements. We examined how the airport's strategic objectives translated into future service requirements, the capability it needed to retain internally, and the implications of different approaches to service delivery.
The work considered strategy, capability, requirements, performance, commercial arrangements and supplier governance as connected issues rather than separate exercises. It also explored how future requirements could provide appropriate scope for competition and innovation while managing operational and transition risk.
The airport gained an independent evidence base from which to make its next strategic and commercial decisions. The work identified opportunities to strengthen requirements, governance and performance arrangements and provided greater clarity about both what the airport should expect from future service provision and the capability it needed to retain as an intelligent customer.
Challenging established assumptions about how airport air traffic services should be delivered
A major airport wanted to consider how its future air traffic service arrangements could better support its longer-term operational and strategic objectives.
Rather than beginning with the existing service model, Solus helped the airport consider the outcomes it wanted to achieve and then examine the service arrangements capable of supporting them.
Drawing on operational, strategic and commercial experience, we considered the relationship between airport objectives and ATS requirements, the respective roles of airport and service provider, and how alternative delivery approaches could influence accountability, performance, transparency and the airport's ability to shape future outcomes.

Separating the outcomes required from assumptions about the existing delivery model allowed alternative approaches to be considered more objectively and demonstrated the value of independent challenge before requirements, organisational structures or commercial arrangements became fixed.
